SECOND QUARTER, INNARLITH
Anyone who understood the difference between beautiful and pretty could see that the girl was the latter. Her round face and big brown eyes were pleasing to the eye, but lacked definition. Her black hair was clean and combed, but she didnât bother doing too much more with it. Her simple white silk shift revealed enough of her body that customers knew what they were getting; not enough to appear crass.
âIf there is anything I can get you while youââ she said.
âNothing, thank you, girl,â Marek interrupted, waving her away. âWe arenât customers. Weâve come to see the lady of the house.â
He could see the girl thinking, considering her response, sizing him up. She glanced at Salatis, and Marek could tell she recognized him. When her eyes passed Insithryllax and settled back on Marek, the Red Wizard could tell sheâd never seen either of them before, and that concerned her.
âYou can go, Cassiya,â Nyla said. The girl couldnât help herself, she sighed in relief and scurried out. âI know sheâs not your type, Master Rymüt.â
âShe may be mine,â Salatis cut in with a cheerful leer.
An annoyed grimace passed quickly across Nylaâs face, then she smiled and turned to Salatis and said, âI can do better than that for the ransar.â
Salatis dipped in a shallow bow and was about to speak when Marek said, âThe ransar told me you had something to say to me?â
Nyla sighed and sat in one of the deep-cushioned easy chairs scattered around the tastefully-decorated parlor. A fire roared in a fireplace big enough to stand in, and the air smelled of wood smoke and rose oil. The woman put a hand to her forehead and traced around the edge of her eyepatch with the tip of a finger.
Marek gestured to Salatis to sit, and wondered briefly if the man would ever be used to his position enough to be offended when others sat while he stood.
When they had settled in Marek asked Nyla, âWhat can we do for you?â
âYou know my business,â she said, glancing between Marek and Salatis.
The ransar avoided her gaze, but Marek said, âItâs an old profession.â
Nyla might have wanted to laugh, but didnât. She said, âI have a hand in other things, and I have friends within the city and without.â
âDo you require our assistance, Senator?â Salatis asked.
âNo,â she said, and Marek didnât believe her. âBut itâs occurred to me that I can help you.â
âIâm all ears,â Salatis replied with that same leer.
âThis canal,â she said.
The three men waited for her to go on, but instead she fingered her missing eye and appeared deep in thought.
âGo on, please,â Marek prompted. He brought a spell to mind and cast it with a tap of his toes and a gesture he passed off as scratching an itch. It wasnât the best way, or the easiest way, to cast the spell, but it was worth it not to reveal himself. âTell us whatâs on your mind.
